Snowflake Fairies | Firefly Photography – NH Photographer

Today was a perfect day for those big fluffy beautiful snowflakes. It’s amazing how fleeting they are – it’s sort of a metaphor for impermanence, isn’t it? They are so delicate and unique and disappear with a single breath of warm air, or a gentle wind.  Next time it snows, look around……….these little glistening beauties are everywhere.

If anyone is interested in the technical side of things, here goes: I purposely underexposed in the evaluative meter, since the flakes themselves will tend to overexpose in the exposure grid. Also, because I did not have a tripod and I suffer from major camera shake, my shutter speed needed to be at least 150. If I wanted the whole snowflake in focus, I needed to adjust my aperture to F11. My ISO ranged from 3200 to 6400 to compensate for these things. You will notice a bit of grain in the photos for this reason. I did some light Photoshop work on them, but not much. Next time I bring a tripod! I think that was a really critical misstep here. Oh I shot with a 100mm macro lens and Canon 5D Mk2.
